ABOUT MYSELF

Thanks for taking the time to work me, it is greatly appriciated. My name is Gert, an (for most people) unpronouncable name originated by my Dutch origin. Feel free to call me ‘Gary’ if that’s easier for you.

I have been interested in radio since I was about 10 years of age, but it took a while before I started learning for my Ham Radio licence. In 2008 I got my first (novice) ham radio licence and in 2009 I got my Dutch full licence and became PA2LO.

I'm a member of ARRL and VERON (the Dutch Amateur Radio Society). I also hold a US callsign: AJ4YX (see below).

AJ4YX (MY US CALLSIGN)

Every year we spend some time in the United States of America. With my Dutch amateur radio license it’s no problem to operate a station in the States: there is a reciprocal agreement between Europe and the USA. But I found out it’s also possible to take the test and recieve a US callsign. So, in 2010 I went to a Hamfest in St Petersburg, Florida and passed the technician, general and amateur extra tests. FCC gave me the beautifull combination AJ4YX. With some fantasy it is almost the name of the famous Dutch soccerteam AJAX (do you remember Johan Cruyff?) My XYL became KJ4UUS the same day. Two HAM’s in one household!

Maybe are you interested in a holiday in Florida? There is a great appartment with shack for rent in Crystal River, 1 hour drive from Orlando. Info here (in Dutch).

Although the main purpose of Amateur Radio is fun, it is called the "Amateur Radio Service" because it also has a serious face. The ITU created this "Service" to fill the need for a pool of experts who could provide backup during emergencies. In addition, the ITU acknowledged the ability of the hobby to advance the communication and technical skills of radio, and to enhance international goodwill. This philosophy has paid off. Countless lives have been saved where skilled hobbyists act as emergency communicators to render aid.

I am a member of VERON Vereniging voor Experimenteel Radio Onderzoek in Nederland
